Speaker: Dennis Chamberland
Dennis Chamberland is the NASA Animal Spaceflight Programs Engineer at the John F. Kennedy
Space Center (KSC). He has served for a decade as the KSC’s Animal Care and Use Committee
Chairman and provides oversight for all Animal Spaceflight Research Programs. He is also a
Bioengineer, having been involved as an advanced life support engineer for systems being considered
for Moon and Mars bases.
Mr. Chamberland is a double alumnus of Oklahoma State University, earning his Masters degree in
Bio-environmental Engineering in 1983. He is a writer, having published some 100 articles in various
national publications. He is a former civilian Nuclear Engineer at the Charleston Naval Base, South
Carolina, and has served as a United States Naval Officer.
Mr. Chamberland is an active NASA aquanaut, having directed 12 underwater missions including the
first ever planting and harvesting of an agricultural crop on the ocean floor in December of 1993. He
is the design engineer of the Scott Carpenter Station, a manned seafloor habitat that completed over a
month of successful mission time in 1997 and again in 1998.
